Discover Russell, Bay of Islands
Russell – once New Zealand’s first capital – is a peaceful, historic waterfront town in the heart of the Bay of Islands.
Swim, kayak or paddleboard right out the front, or walk to Long Beach (around 15 minutes) for a sheltered swim. Visit Christ Church, New Zealand’s oldest church, and the Russell Museum, or climb Flagstaff Hill for panoramic views across the bay.
Out on the water there’s sailing, fishing, diving and boat trips to the bay’s 144 islands, with a good chance of spotting dolphins. The Paihia ferry and the Waitangi Treaty Grounds are a short hop across the water.
Back in town, the waterfront cafés, restaurants and boutique shops are all just a short walk from your door.
